Kamar Kosong

Bali & Java, 2011-2012

Halfway between photography and performance, this series stages a bamboo hut in picturesque landscapes. It was initiated during a creative residency in Indonesia at the Alliance Française of Denpasar in Bali (2010) and later extended in a more urban setting at the CCCL of Surabaya in Java (2011).

Using the most rudimentary stereotype of a house, I conceived this series as the spatial translation of a drawing into photographic space. While the images initially function as poetic evocations of a utopian dwelling, they also reflect a critical approach to the issue of housing. Beneath the apparent charm of aesthetic compositions, they offer nothing more than an illusory and futile shelter.

Partially presented at the East Java Biennale, some of these images were later used in a communication campaign for a fictional company: Kamar Kosong©. The promotional arguments (“direct beach access,” “total panoramic view,” “eco-friendly construction,” etc.) referenced a reality as irrefutable as it was absurd.
