Burkina Faso

2012-2013

In 2012, during my participation in the Carrefour des Arts Plastiques, I explored the connections between artists and artisans, aiming to bridge these two often-opposed worlds through various collaborations during my creative residency.

With Bruno Revert and the Cynicom Artists’ Collective, we engaged with numerous creators in Ouagadougou, entrusting them with bringing our artistic "ideas" to life. From Face-O-Scéno, which supported several installation projects, to the Lukaré Center, which crafted traditional masks inspired by modern iconography, our partnerships were diverse. We collaborated with painters Jules César and Guédor One on rural Street Art projects, seamstress Mimina Brawa to create superhero-themed boubous, sculptor Kevin Miloungou for anachronistic pottery, Napam Beogo bronze artisans for imported fetish objects, and decorator Junior for the communication plan of the fictional company Burkea.

Through these delegated creative processes, I questioned the concept of ownership—not intellectual but artistic—of the resulting works. By placing those who usually remain in the background at the forefront of the exhibition, we highlighted and critically examined the often-overlooked practice of outsourcing production in contemporary art.
